"Following high school, I entered St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. There I studied for three years, summers included. While there I met my future husband, also a student in NYC, and we married 10 days after I graduated from Nursing School. I took the State Nursing Boards and became an RN that same year.
We moved to Ilion NY, near Utica, where I worked in the local hospital and sometimes in Utica, gaining experience in the emergency room, surgery, labor and delivery, medical, surgical care and as weekend Supervisor. It was in Ilion that my first children were born: Elizabeth (1967), James (1968), Jennifer (1971).
In 1971, we moved to Skaneateles, NY (Finger Lakes region) since my husband's new job was in Syracuse, NY. We were there for 29 years. In 1977 I had another child, Preston. All of the children went from Kindergarten through high school there, and it was wonderful place to live. The first 1-1/2 yr we were there, Mary Lou and Dennis Streelman lived in a neighboring town, and we spent much time together (however, Dennis was later transferred back to NJ and then to the Chicago area). While in Skaneateles, I worked at the local hospital, did some private duty, worked at blood drives, learned to play golf (thanks to the Streelmans), and learned to play Bridge from some local friends.
I returned to nursing full time around 1988, when Preston was a little older, doing Home Care or Visiting Nursing, which was becoming a growing field. I found my greatest love for Nursing in this activity; the opportunity to interact one-on-one with patients, to do some teaching, and to see how your teaching and care had an impact on their health and well-being was what I found I truly enjoyed. I took some college classes at the Community College and learned a lot about community services and social work, another big aspect of Visiting Nursing. I have continued to work as a Visiting Nurse to this day, although I have worked per diem for the last nine years instead of full time.
In 2000, I married for the second time, and moved to Somers, CT. In Somers, I continued to work as a Visiting Nurse, belonged to several Bridge clubs, played golf in the summer, belonged to the local Woman's Club (where I handled their publicity), and acted as Clerk of the Vestry for our Church.
In 2012, we moved to Winnemissett Oaks Drive in DeLand, Florida. I continue to enjoy sewing, knitting, and, perhaps, will continue to cane chairs for a side business as I have since the Ilion days.
There are now 9 grandchildren in my life, although (sadly) none live near me. We visit them as often as we are able, and only wish they were closer. I have been in good health and Life is Good !! "
