81. MENNING, Charles ("Chuck") Eugene -- now deceased (Aug, 2007)

Our classmate, Chuck Menning, (Air Force Lt. Col. Charles Menning) was born February 9, 1943, in Iowa.
Ater graduating Midland Park High School in 1961 (see his high school activities listed above), he attended Hope College in Michigan, where he was a member of Chi Phi Sigma fraternity; the Blue Key (an honorary society); Delta Phi Alpha (a German honorary); and was Editor-in-Chief for the second year of the Hope College school newspaper.
During his Senior year at Hope, he became engaged to one of his classmates, Nina Kay Bossenbroek, also a Senior (see news photo below). Chuck and Nina were married four months later in June 1965.
After graduating from Hope College, Chuck became a reporter for the Pittsburgh Press for two years. He then enlisted in the Air National Guard and flew full time as a pilot until his retirement in 1998 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.
He was an avid crossword puzzle constructor and a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins and minor league baseball teams in the Mid West.
Chuck was living in Pittsburgh, Pa., when he died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, of complications following surgery. He was 64. He is buried in Oak Wood Cemetery, Pella, Iowa, next to his parents, the Rev. Ralph Menning and Irene Bogaard Menning.
Family members still living include his brothers, Bruce Menning of Grand Rapids, Mich (married to Vicky Fris); Mark Menning of Lansing, Mich (married to Pat); and Roger Menning of Crystal Lake, Ill. (married to Joyce). Also surviving are four nieces; three nephews; and two grand-nieces.

Here I am making cotton candy, a ritual I love. I have 6 grandchildren and they know that Grandma always has her professional-sized candy cotton machine in the trunk of her car, and that I am always ready to haul it out to make one of our favorite treats. I have a lot of different flavors of sugars, so, the kids have fun choosing their favorite..................
